Bunsen Colloquium on the occasion of the 75th birthday of Peter C. Schmidt

We are happy to report that the Bunsen Colloquium on Defects and diffusion in solids took place from November 10 to 11, 2016 in Aachen, Germany. Thanks to all participants for making the Bunsen Colloquium a success!

The past years have seen several Bunsen Colloquia devoted to reactivity as well as diffusivity in solids, topics that are of central importance in advanced materials research and engineering. This year’s Bunsen Colloquium continued this series. It focused on defects and diffusion in solids and on the application of new theoretical concepts. Understanding the microscopic properties of solids at the level of defects and diffusion mechanisms is critical for understanding the macroscopic properties of materials. Ever more powerful supercomputers and superior program packages now allow the complex behaviour of atoms and ions to be studied. Approximations that were previously required can now be neglected due to improved algorithms, as will be discussed at this Colloquium. Topics covered were, for example, the explicit consideration of phonon-electron coupling in quantum mechanical calculations for electronic conductivity and the application of time-dependent DFT methods to materials’ research.

The list of speakers included:

  • Stefan Blügel (Jülich)
  • Walter Wolf (Wien)
  • Volker Eyert (Potsdam)
  • Timo Jacob (Ulm)
  • Jörg Neugebauer (Düsseldorf)
  • Florian Müller-Plathe (Darmstadt)
  • Kurt Stokbro (Kopenhagen)
  • Tomáš Bucko (Bratislava)
  • Eberhard Gross (Halle)
  • Jürgen Janek (Gießen)
  • Rainer Waser (Aachen)

Besides the Invited Lectures, the Colloquium included an extended Poster Session with many poster presentations that were concerned with cutting-edge investigations on the topic of this Colloquium.
